Hiking the high trail of the Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan, China

Many would argue that the trail leading through the Tiger Leaping Gorge ranks amongst the most scenic treks one can undertake in China. We couldn't agree more!

Reputedly the deepest canyon in the world, the Tiger Leaping Gorge measures 16km long and a staggering 3900m from the waters of the Jinsha (Yangtze) River to the snowcapped mountain tips of the Haba Mountain Range to the West and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the East. It got its name from a story describing how a tiger escaped it’s hunters by leaping across the Yangtze River in one go.

The hike along a scenic trail high above the gorge along the Eastern slope of the Haba Mountain offers some of the finest views in Yunnan.

Deep below the roaring waters of the Yangtze River squeeze their way through the, at some places only 15m wide gorge, while, on the opposite side, the sheer cliffs of the Jade Dragon Mountains rise up to the 13 peaks of the 5’596m high Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

You stay overnight in rustic, clean guesthouses along the trail and enjoy the hospitality of the friendly locals.

This trek is also suitable for active families with children above the age of 8. Ask us about details. A minimum amount of fitness is required for this trip.
