On a journey throughout the Tibetan Plateau of Western Sichuan Province in Chian, a visit of the laid-back Tibetan town of Tagong should not be messed. The sleepy, Tibetan influenced city Tagong is about 1 hour drive north of Xinduqiao. The city of Tagong is situated at 3'700m, embedded in a gentle hilly landscape, surrounded by the typical steppe landscape of the Tibetan high plateau of West Sichuan.
In the center of Tagong stands the Tagong Monastery. Tagong Monastery is part of the Nyingmapa sect ("Red Hats"). The foundation of Tagong Monastery dates back to the 7th century, the present monastery was built in the late Qing Dynasty.
Those who prefer to enjoy the beautiful view of the wide grassland, the Yak herds, the snow-covered mountains as well as the monastery in the distance without entrance and in peaceful environment, should climb one of the numerous hills in the surroundings of Tagong.
