Leshan Giant Buddha
Visit the giant Buddha
The Giant Buddha of Leshan, at 71 metres high the largest Buddha in the world, is located about 120km south of Chengdu. By public bus it takes about 2 hours to get to Leshan. This colossal Giant Buddha of Leshan was carved into a cliff face overlooking the confluence of the Dadu River and the Min River.
Work started around 713 A.D. under the guidance of a Monk called Haitong and it took over 90 years to complete. The enormous amount of rocks and silt that were discarded into the river inadvertently helped taming the dangerous currents and made the passage for boats much safer.
The Giant Buddha of Leshan was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.
